The making of a shirt.

For my second project, I had to make a shirt. I started off designing some of my own shirt designs where I focused on the basic details of a shirt e.g, buttons, darts, pockets collars ect.

These are pocket designs that I drew of the different shapes of pockets that are used on shirts.

My next task was to create samples on the sewing machine of experimenting with different techniques and so I could get used to the sewing machine before I went onto make my shirt. I struggled with the speed of it at first as it wasn't what I was used to, previously coming from a-level textiles I had been used to a basic sewing machine and that was a big jump to the industry machines that I'm now using.
These are my first samples I made on the sewing machine.

After creating my samples, I went onto making my pattern pieces for my shirt. When I first began this task I struggled a lot as it was all very new to me. It took me a while to get the hang of it but I think after a few attempts I will start to grasp the process of pattern cutting.

Designing process - First project.

To start the designing process for this project, I began creating thumbnails of garments inspired by Antoni Gaudi's architecture. I took elements from Gaudi's creations and combined them into my designs by re-creating the colours he used, detailing and structure of the garment.

The next task I did was to create a collection of designs. I went through my thumbnails and choose which garment designs had the same detail, colour, patterns on them to form a collection. After deciding which of my designs I was putting into a collection, I started thinking about my colour scheme. I went back to my sketchbook and looked at the colours I had used in their to create my colour palette.

This is my first collection "Cut out."

The collection "Cut out" is inspired by this image of Gaudi's iron gate.

The second collection I designed "Gems" is mosaic inspired. The colourful jewels on the designs are put together and shaped in the style of mosaic. I also tried to re-create the shape of Gaudi's architecture on the garments.

I was inspired by this mosaic architectures colours and structure.
My third and last collection is called "Squareside." I used two different tones of blue to really re-create the image of Gaudi's Gingerbread house.
Images where I got my inspiration from.

After creating my collections I then went onto design flats of the garments I chose for my final line up.

This is my final line up of my designs. The designing process for this project was my favorite part as I got to experiment with different designs, colours and detailing  and as I gathered all my inspiration from Antoni Gaudi's architecture the idea's for my designs came fairly quick to me.

My first project.

For my first project I focused on architecture. At the start of the project I was unsure on what type of architecture to focus on so I started doing a lot of research on the internet and in books. I then discovered an architect called 'Antoni Gaudi' and after doing a lot of research on him I decided to make Gaudi the focus of my project.

These are three of my mood-boards that I completed at the start of the project showing my theme.

Image of Antoni Gaudi's iron gate which inspired my mood boards and the first pages in my sketchbook.

After creating my mood-boards, I then started creating an A3 sketchbook on Antoni Gaudi's architecture. I did a lot of research to prepare me for this from Gaudi books and collected images from the internet. I spent a lot of time planning what images I wanted to use and which drawings I did in the sketchbook as I wanted it to reflect Antoni Gaudi's work.

I was inspired by this image of Gaudi's 'Gingerbread house' based in Barcelona so i re-created part of the image in my sketchbook and used the colours and patterns on the masterpiece in my own designs of garments.

I then started looking at the mosaic architecture Gaudi created around Barcelona and how designers like Alexander Mcqueen also took inspiration from Antoni Gaudi and re-created his patterns, shapes and colours into there S/S 2012 collection.

La Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona.

S/S 2012 Alexander Mcqueen collection. The dresses inspiration was taken from the La Sagrada Familia cathedral design.

For the next part of my project I decided to do some primary research. I wanted to find pieces of architecture that really reflected Gaudi's work. Firstly, I visited a cathedral in town and took images of colorful stain glass windows, gates and anything that had resemblance to Gaudi's architecture.

The next primary research I did, I went into town to look at architecture that would resemble Gaudi. I then came across this building which caught my eye and thought the vivid blues and structure of the building would link in with Gaudi's architecture.

For the last few pages in my sketchbook I focused on re-creating Gaudi's architecture in the style of my own drawings. I used a lot of colour and really focused on the detail. Creating a sketchbook was one of my favorite tasks of this project as I loved experimenting with re-creating gaudi's architecture in the style of drawings and the sketchbook helped me come up with my design ideas and colour palettes for my next tasks.
